Pyramid of Excellence Award Winners

2004 University of Memphis Physical Plant

Across the State of Tennessee, institutions of higher learning are being asked to do more with less. Tight fiscal times have forced legislators and institutional administrators to re-evaluate processes in an attempt to becomemore efficient.

The University of Memphis is no different. Campus-wide, departments have been asked to review all processes and cut back wherever possible. When this practice became mandatory, Physical Plant was at an advantage because of participation in the Greater Memphis Association for Quality and the Baldridge Criteria which it employs.

For four years, the Physical Plant Department at The University of Memphis has applied for and received recognition for quality from the Greater Memphis Association for Quality (GMAQ). The first year brought a Level I Quality Commitment Award, and every year since has meant a higher level of recognition. This year the department reached GMAQ’s pinnacle for recognition, The Pyramid of Excellence.

The Pyramid of Excellence allows the department’s staff to be recognized as “world-class.” Not only does this classification boost morale, it also sets a standard. The men and women in Physical Plant work very hard and crews are frequently asked to go above and beyond one’s call of duty to meet the demands of the department’s vision – “Quality Service Supporting Quality Education.

The entire staff of Physical Plant is proud to be this year’s recipient of the GMAQ Pyramid of Excellence Award. GMAQ and the University are fine Memphis organizations. We’re appreciative to be a part of both!

2004 Porter-Leath Children's Center

Porter-Leath began this journey toward a quality culture in 1998 with a commitment from Mike Warr, new Porter-Leath Executive Director, and the Agency Board of Directors to improve Porter-Leath Children’s Center’s ability to provide “world class” services, develop process improvement systems and create measurable outcomes.

At the time of this commitment, Porter-Leath suffered from a languishing culture, average care, ineffective systems, unsound processes and no quality improvement initiative. After the implementation of a systematic and sound quality improvement management system, the children and families served by the various programs of Porter-Leath can be assured that they are receiving, on a daily basis, the highest quality services as measured by industry standards. Successful outcomes, satisfaction with services and staff support indicators are at all time high levels at Porter-Leath.

The five-year journey to receiving the Pyramid of Excellence required many years of top quality programming and a firm commitment to the principles and practices of the organization. Porter-Leath is honored to receive this award and sends a special “thank you” to all the dedicated Porter-Leath stakeholders who strive for quality excellence every day.

Mike Warr Executive Director

Quality is the foundation of our business. The Quality Improvement Process (QIP) to us is not posters, slogans, big talk, or quality department rhetoric. It is the WAY we run our business. QIP to us is working on the attitudes and systems reengineering to focus on the customer. We look forward to the future!" Rhett Hailey, CEO, Trane Commercial Sales and Services
